Update: Family Tree PHP 1.0 (beta)

A new version of Family Tree PHP is now released: version 1.0. It is only a beta version for now, but it contains a lot of major improvements, including the long awaited add and edit functionality, which makes this version a complete genealogy program for stand alone use. That’s why a leading zero of the version number is now turned into a 1.

Improvements:

  • Persons, families, events, sources, repositories and citations can be added and edited directly, without the need for a gedcom import.
  • Language codes for non default languages are shown in the url, which enables search engines to index pages separately for all languages.
  • Ancestors reports now contain all children of the ancestors, with links between generations (from child to parents and from parents to child) and between partners.
  • Descendants reports now contain links from child to parents.
  • Privacy flags are no longer calculated after gedcom import, but on the fly; they are cached and reset when the cache is reset; they are also updated when records are added, edited or deleted.
  • Cron job functionality added for maintainance.
  • Separate stastics for each tree.
  • Pages can have child pages linked to them.
  • Users can choose to send a comment only to the admin, without it being stored in the database.
  • When a tree is deleted, the bookmarks linked to this tree are also deleted.
  • Many more minor improvements…

No longer for free

As I announced earlier, from this version on, Family Tree PHP will no longer be free. The reasons for this I have stated in the earlier announcement. The price will be 14.95 EUR, but for this beta release the price is only 9.95 EUR. So if you buy a license now, you get a discount of 5.00 EUR. Language and template packages can still be downloaded for free and anyone who provides a translation or template set for this new version, gets a free license (or a refund if you already purchased a license). In addition to that, anyone who in the past made a donation, can contact me to get a free license too.

How to update:

Update instructions

Because the database structure is very much changed, it is recommended to do a new gedcom import after you have updated to this version. If you do not, no data will be lost, but some data might not be in the right fields.

    Hi,

When the stable version is released, will another 5.00 EUR need to be paid or will another 14.95 EUR need to be paid? Or is the actual price 9.95 EURO and not 14.95 EUR?

    • Gerrit Veldman says:

If you pay, you get a license for version 1, that is for all coming updates untill version 2 is released. If you pay during the beta period you pay only 9.95 EUR. If you pay after the beta period, you pay 14.95 EUR. So, whether you pay now or after the beta period, you do not have to pay again untill version 2 is released, and than you get a special upgrade price.

Do Paypal make two extracts for one payment, one test and then the real payment? It was a long time since I payed through PayPal and if I recall correct there was problems with this. I charge my card for each payment, one at the time.

    • Gerrit Veldman says:

I never heard of this, so I guess it will be okay. I am a long time PayPal user and only have good experiences.

      • Phryxe says:

I suppose there are no problems if you allow unlimited extracts from your credit card.

      • Phryxe says:

        PayPal sucks …

“Your credit or debit card has been denied for this transaction, PayPal could not validate the card. Verify that the specified information is correct or try another credit or debit card.”

        • Gerrit Veldman says:

Do you have a PayPal account? Maybe it works if you validate your card first and then try to pay.

Contact my directly, if it does not work. Maybe you can try a direct bank transfer (BIC/IBAN).

          • Phryxe says:

Now it worked (I hope) and it was probably as I thought. You need to let PayPal do two extractions to pay one bill …

  3. Phryxe says:

Can one create one or more trees (GEDCOMs) online? I guess the idea is to separate the online editing trees from the imported ones not risking overwriting data.

Is it possible to export a GEDCOM for backup, or how do one backup?

    • Gerrit Veldman says:

Creating more than one tree was already possible in all previous versions and is still possible. Separating imported and directly created trees to prevent overwriting data on gedcom import was indeed the idea behind this.

Gedcom export and database backup modules were added several versions ago.

      • Phryxe says:

Yeah, I know you could create several trees by importing GEDCOMs. Good to know you also can create trees directly online.

Haven’t hade any use for the backup or export since I replace all data each time I update. With online editing this will come in handy.
