How do I get a Gedcom file?

Okay, this is very basic, but right now without a Gedcom file you can’t do a thing with Family Tree PHP. So if you never heard about Gedcom before, this is an important question.

Gedcom files are used to transport family tree data from one user to another or from one software source to another. Any quality genealogy program can export it’s data in Gedcom format.

So to get your family tree data in a Gedcom file, you need a genealogy program, enter your data in this program and export the Gedcom file.

Maybe you wanted to use Family Tree PHP as your only genealogy program. In that case I have to disappoint you. Right now Family Tree PHP can not be used for that. It’s only purpose is to import Gedcom files from other sources and publish the data from these files on the web. But the good news is: I am planning to expand Family Tree PHP and make it into a full genealogy program in the future. Just be patient.
